Lockhart and Wilson were in charge of Blackwood’s Magazine in 1817, in which he attracted Leigh Hunt, editor of the liberal journal The Examiner. In Peter’s Letters, Lockhart in letter form, describes a visit to Edinburgh and contains controversial, satirical character sketches of Edinburgh figures. Lockhart moved to London in 1825 to edit the Quarterly Review, founded by John Murray, son of the publisher. Lockhart wrote biographies of Napoleon, Burns, and a seven volume biography of Scott.
