However the Boston fire destroyed all but an estimated 50 copies of this printing so the 1873 Geo Smith printing is considered the next true first edition (or some refer to as the second printing of the first edition of this book), printed by Geo. M. Smith & Company 1873. Fully illustrated with 110 illustrations, 303 pages.The book is in great condition with green boards with slightly rubbed gilt scenes and titles, to the front and spine, and still has the scarce original deep brown coated end papers. The book has benefited from having the spine professionally rebacked with the original cloth laid back down, and presents extremely well. The interior pages are overall remarkably clean and fresh with some occasional scattered handling mark, and some foxing to the last few pages. The book has a penciled owner name to the first blank page, otherwise no edgewear, and the binding is very tight and square. Unlike most copies of this title which have poor/cracked bindings and loose pages, this book is tightly bound and is quite readable and not fragile.
