Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1923 KAISERSLAUTERN Weimar GERMANY Choice Crisp "500 MILLION MARKS" Notgeld NOTE Description This is a nice, oh so near crisp uncirculated, “Good For” 500,000,000, that’s Five Hundred Million, Marks “Notgeld” note from the “Stadt” or City of Kaiserslautern in the Rhineland-Palatinate area of “Weimar” Germany. It is dated October 10, 1923 during the inflationary period in Germany after World War I. Kaiserslautern is located in southwest Germany. It dates to the 9th century but was 85 percent destroyed during World War II. Today it is home to around 100,000 folks. Germany, who had borrowed to finance World War I, had a staggering national debt of 156 billion marks by 1918. The government printed money without sufficient economic backing, exacerbating the problem. Face: No. 79990 • October 10, 1923. • Dark green and brown on tan paper. After World War I, the value of the German currency continued to fall. The “Treaty of Versailles” required substantial reparations payments to the Allied powers. German currency remained relatively stable at about 90 marks per dollar in the first half of 1921. But, by late 1922, with French and Belgian troops occupying the Ruhr valley due to Germany’s failure to pay reparations, hyperinflation escalated dramatically. In June 1922, the cost-of-living index was 41. By December, it had soared to 685, nearly 17 times higher. As can be seen here, it got worse. Back: 500 MILLIONEN MARK. • German Eagle. The Note: A nice crisp uncirculated note I thought. It took me a while to see it but it has been folded in half. It also has some light wrinkles but is still fully crisp and bright. The note will be sent in a new currency holder that protects it. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself. Remember, FREE SHIPPING!
