Description: THREE (3) Rare early original WATERCOLOR renderings of theatrical costumes for an unknown production in 1893, by legendary designer Attilio Comelli. Possibly for a PLAY, though probably an OPERA. The Royal Opera House Collections Department in London has 1,408 Comelli designs for 78 opera and ballet productions dating from 1898 to 1925. Italian designer Attilio Giuseppe de Comelli von Stuckenfeld (1858–1925), known as Attilio Comelli, was appointed house designer to the Royal Opera House in the 1890s. His designs are to be found in most of the major theatre collections around the world: The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The Harry Ransome Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, and The Performing Arts Collection at the Arts Centre in Melbourne. All 3 appear to be on paper, though the reverse side is very rough, so possibly it was originally on board, and peeled away at some point to be mounted. There is vintage dried glue on the back, most likely mucilage, which had let go of whatever is was mounted to. All are FADED, browned (but NOT brittle), & faintly stained from the rear glue. All SIGNED “ A. Comelli ’93 ”. Watercolor, Gouache, Ink, & Graphite. 1. Man, says “Peasants” at top: Approx. 11 1/2” x 8”. Small tear at bottom. 2. Woman, says “Girls” at top: Approx. 10” x 6 1/2”. 3. Woman with staff behind her: Approx. 10” x 6 1/4”. Small layer of paper lifted on rear only, near middle. PLEASE SEE PICTURES. Sold AS IS.
