There are about 40 varieties of this type of corn, and all members of this group are believed to have originated from a particular variety from Guatemala. Over the centuries Guatemalan seeds were traded north into Mexico and further south into Central and South America by the many indigenous groups. The corn crossed with other landrace varieties and many related nitrogen-fixing varieties developed over time. These varieties of corn have been grown in Mesoamerica by the indigenous people for many centuries.While many of these varieties are grown in mountain regions, some are adapted to lowlands as well. The actual corn kernels can come in a variety of colors, ranging from white, red, pink, blue, and colors in between. This variety is primarily blue/purple/black kernels.The corn is eaten as corn-on-the-cob while still tender, or dry as a grain for making posole, atole, or masa for tortillas and other dishes. The tall stalks are used as forage for livestock and as fuel for cooking. This corn grows in poor soils with little to no additional fertilizer.
