Description: Jebel Barkal, View of the Pyramids of Meroe in Nubia. From Voyage a Meroe, by Frédéric Caillaud. This original lithograph from Caillaud’s work depicts a group of six pyramids and a group of the explorers with a camel. The work shows great detail and is in good condition, though some spots of foxing that are visible in the photos. The image has been professionally matted and framed. The framed piece measures 19 ¼” x 14 ¼”. The plate is titled “Mont-Barkal, Vue des Pyramides Nord-Ouest, Prise de Sud-Est” and is plate LII, published between 1823 and 1827. Frédéric Caillaud (1787-1869) was an explorer, writer and mineralogist who became one of the first Europeans to visit the ancient city of Meroe, located far up the Nile, inside modern-day Sudan. In 1815 he had been commissioned by Mehemet Ali to explore the desert east and west of the Nile. Starting in 1819 he made four subsequent expeditions, which are the subject of this work.
