Description: This is a late 18th or early 19th century ceramic opium den "pillow". It wasn't a actually used as a pillow. The purpose of this item was as a safe to keep valuables. This particular "pillow" is covered with traditional Han Chinese characters. I have been told that the writing is a morality tract written by Zhu Bolu in the 1600s. His writing was similar to the Confucian Maxims. I purchased this "pillow" in 1997 on a trip to Japan. It was purchased at a shrine sale. I was told that it was a geisha pillow. I did not find out the true purpose of this item until recently. It is a beautiful item but we are downsizing.
