Description: Gurage tribe headrest. Made by the Gurage tribe. Indigenous peoples of Ethiopia. Used to protect there intricate hairstyles. To keep hair clean and to not flatten. Would get passed on to family member. Would also represent status. This example is from late 1800’s to early 1900’s. Has a lux sheen from butter based hair dressing. This is called Kabbe and is all over this example. See the last pictures for the details. You can still smell it. Hand carved from 2 solid pieces of wood. Pegged and nailed on each side. 3 grooved lines at the bottom. 2 at the middle. No other adornment. Wood has stunning patina and character. 6” tall. Top is 6 1/8” X 2 1/8” at the widest. Base is 4 3/4” radius.
