Description: • For Your Consideration: • A First-Edition HARDCOVER of: • “INTERIOR DESIGN: ITS HISTORY, PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE” (Country Life Limited, 1963) (Hardcover, First Edition)• BY ELAINE DENBY • Illustrated with 140 Photographs • “This book combines for the first time a study of the historical outlines with consideration of the theory and practice of interior design, looking at all aspects of the decorative treatment of the interiors of secular—chiefly domestic—buildings. • “HISTORY OF DESIGN: Ancient Civilizations to The Twentieth Century The author divides her book into four parts. In the first she looks back at the world-wide history of interior design and traces it from the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Persia, Greece and Rome, India, China and Japan to the twentieth century. This survey includes the Islamic influence in the Middle Ages, the exciting discoveries and developments of the Renaissance, the baroque movement of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the neo-classicism of the mid and late eighteenth century, the various movements of the nineteenth century when styles changed with bewildering rapidity, and the interesting trends of this century. • “ANALYSIS OF EXAMPLES: Some Historic Interiors. In the second part MISS DENBY gives a close analysis of three distinctive English interiors chosen for Westminster Hall, the Painted Hall at Greenwich, and the Ante-Room at Syon House, Middlesex. What she calls an element of drama is common to all three examples. • “BASIS AND PRINCIPLES: Relation to Architecture | The Vocabulary of Design In the third part the author turns to the basis and principles of interior design; its function in relation to architecture and its vocabulary—form, colour, pattern, texture. • “MATERIALS OF DESIGN: The Basic Elements | Treatment of Surfaces | Furniture and Furnishings. Finally, in the fourth part, she deals with the materials of design—the basic elements of buildings, the treatment of surfaces, lighting, furniture and furnishings, and the use in design of sculpture, painting and objets d’art. “The illustrations naturally play an important part in such a book and the many photographs—some 140 of them in colour or black-and-white—have been chosen with great care from many parts of the world, so that they are complementary to the text. “In recent years ELAINE DENBY has travelled in fifteen countries, including the United States, looking at the buildings and interiors which provide the background to this book. “She was educated at Casterton School and trained at Leeds School of Architecture. Now in private practice as an architect and interior design consultant. Currently (1962/63) Secretary of the R.I.B.A. Library Committee, adviser on architectural subjects to the ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA and consultant to IDEAL HOME.” —THE PUBLISHER • • For other details about this book, please see below. • TITLE: “INTERIOR DESIGN: Its History, Principles and Practice” AUTHOR: ELAINE DENBY ILLUSTRATED: WITH 5 COLOR PLATES & MANY B&W PHOTOS TYPE: HARDCOVERPAGES: 206 PUBLISHER, LOCALE, & YEAR: Country Life Limited (London), 1963 EDITION: First Edition, First Printing* *RE: On the Copyright Page, the statement “First published in 1963”—with no later printings listed.
