Perkins I have always had both a love of nature and an admiration for the beauty of natural wood and wood grain. This led my wife and I many years ago to buy a few acres of land in northern Wisconsin that was rather remote and bordered thousand of acres of public forest land. We spent many hours wondering the area enjoying everything that nature has to offer. To increase our comfort over a tent, we built a very small, one room cabin that is off grid and requires a minimum of effort to maintain. One of those duties that sometime has to be done is that trees that become a hazard need to be removed. This past year there was a beautiful Yellow Birch that was over hanging the cabin that needed to come down and it deserved to be put to better use then to just be used as firewood. This is when I came up with the idea to make these traditional three-legged stools, similar to ones that I saw in a local museum about Wisconsin’s early settlers, using traditional hand tools. The only power tool used was the chainsaw that took the tree down. Each piece is cut with a hand saw. The legs are hand tapered with a draw knife and final sizing is done with a wood rasp to be a snug fit into the holes that are made with a hand brace and boring bits. Each leg is then both glued and screwed to ensure long life with the screws recessed and hidden under wooden plugs. The wood rasp is used again to level each piece before hand sanding to bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain. After hand painting the designs, four coats of polyurethane are applied to protect the smooth top finish to complete the creation. I can only hope that you enjoy using them as much as I enjoyed creating them. More creations to come.
