Microphone Mic Mod Kit for MXL 990 920 770 2003 2006 1006 V57M V63M V250 MCA SP1

Description: IMPORTANT: Please note that this mod only works on the versions of these mics that use through-hole components. Some newer versions that were introduced in early 2013 use surface-mount components, for which this mod will not work. If in doubt, open up the mic to ensure that the circuit use soldered, through-hole components for caps C3, C4, and C13. Note that if your mics were manufactured before 2013, the mod should most definitely work for you. For more details about the surface-mount 990, you can Google search "surface mount MXL 990". If you are modifying an MXL V57M, V63M, 2006, V250, or MCA SP1, the circuit board should look like the one in the pictures for the listing. Now, on with the show...The original Ebay mic mod kit is now better than ever! This kit includes the parts needed to modify/upgrade the mic models listed below. Believe it or not, all of these mics share either the same, or a remarkably similar circuit design, which allows the same basic mod procedure and parts to work for all of these makes and models. The following mics are compatible with this kit:MXL: 990, 991, 992, 993, 920, 770, V57M, V63M, V93M (same mic as 2003), 2003 (the original, NOT the newer 2003A), 1006, 2006, V250, MCA SP-1, Mix UA-1, 441, 551, 600, 603, 603S, 604, CR24P 797 Audio: CR1-4Advanced Audio: CM-54ADK: SC-1, SC-2, SC-T Alctron: HSMC001 AKG: Perception 170 (the older “Perception 170”, NOT the newer “P170” that replaced it) AMT: 404 Apex: 180, 185, 435Audio 2000: ACM1901Badaax: CM40, MC001 Busman: BSC-1CAD: GXL1200, GXL2200, GXL2200BP, GXL2400Carillon: AXIS 1Cascade: M37, M39Eagletone: CM40 Felio: CR1-11, CR1-14Gauge: ECM-87 KAM: i2Monoprice: 600800, 600700Nady: CM90, CM95, SCM800, SCM900 (post-2002)Peluso: CEMC-6SE Electronics: SE1, SE1A, SE2AT.Bone: SC400This kit includes the parts needed to perform this mod ON ONE MICROPHONE. If you are modifying multiple mics, you will need to order a SEPARATE KIT FOR EACH MIC. The following parts are included in each kit:(2) Metal Film capacitors(1) Polystyrene (styroflex) capacitorPDF download with 12 pages of detailed instructions and color photos for performing the mod on each of the 3 basic variants of microphones represented above (small, medium, and large-bodied mics. BONUS: detailed instructions (with color photos) explaining the procedure for the "headbasket mod" for the medium and large-bodied mics (included in the PDF download)To perform this mod, you simply remove 3 of the stock capacitors (which are often ceramic, and/or of dubious quality) and replace them with the high-quality capacitors included in this kit. These capacitors do not have a polarity, so it doesn't matter which lead you connect to which side.Upon receiving payment, I will mail your kit/s along with a slip of paper that contains the download link for the instructions. Most who have performed the mod say it only takes about 15 or 20 minutes per mic, and makes a noticeable improvement in the sound quality. When I first discovered this mod, I had lots of experience soldering the connectors for my own audio cables, but very little experience soldering on printed circuit boards. I had never modified a mic before and was a little unsure of myself, so the first one took me about 20 minutes. Since then, I've modified dozens of these mics for myself and my friends, and in most cases, I've had them done in probably no more than 10 or 15 minutes each.If you've been wanting to try your hand at an easy DIY (do-it-yourself) mic mod, this is a great first-time project. These mics can be purchased new or used for very little money, and their performance can be improved considerably with this simple mod. These parts are hard to find, and frequently out of stock at major electronics suppliers, but you can get them here while they last! Here's what some folks have said after performing the mod: "After those 3 simple cap changes the already decent mic becomes wonderful. I will be using these mics more and more.""It helped smooth some of the harshness in the HF region.""A little less "honky" in the midrange...overall, I think the mod is definitely a positive improvement to the mic.""Nice mod, seems to open up the low end especially.""I noticed that voices became less harsh in the upper mids. On acoustic guitar, the initial attack of the notes changed to a smoother sound. It's hard to hear at first, but once you do you can't NOT hear it.""The difference is in what people like to call resolution or detail. Better caps remove artifacts that lesser caps produce and that you only begin to hear once they're gone, because you thought they were part of the signal. There is a certain nasal quality that disappears... It's probably something in the realm of distortion and/or transient response. I have no means to measure that, but you can hear it.""The unmodded mic makes the guitar sound a little nasal, narrow and compressed. When you switch to the modded mic, it's almost as if the guitar had a bigger body. I could hear the difference both on headphones and my monitors.""After getting used to the modified mics the unmodified mics sound like the high end is drifting in and out of phase or something. Almost like it has a bit of flange on it. The modification eliminated this. I didn't notice until after the mod...but once I heard it I couldn't NOT hear it.""Before the mod, I had tried using my 603 pair on acoustic guitar and drum overheads. The sound was really thin and anemic, so I just put them back in the case and they probably sat there for at least a year, and I even considered getting rid of them. After the mod, I tried them again, and they worked great for both of those applications. The low end was fuller, the top end was smoother, and now I use them on practically every session.""...we were working in a studio with access to some Neumann KM184's, and there we were, using the 50-dollar, modified MXL's."--------------------Note: This mod does require some basic tools and soldering skills! If you aren't comfortable performing the mod yourself, I also offer a mod service in which case I will do it for you. Contact me for more details. We also offer another mod kit for the MXL 2001/V67/V67G, Nady SCM-900, Apex 420/430, Joe Meek JM47, T-Bone SC-450, Audix CX-111, and ADK A-51.
