Description: Not sure of the exact name of this opuntia. I received this as a single pad in return for giving someone a ride. Very good trade, this is one of my favorite plants I have in my garden. These are rooted pads in one gallon pots. The second picture is the cactus in my garden that these came from. The tallest it’s been was 5 feet before laying down in the winter. It springs right back up in spring. Covered in yellow flowers and new pads in late spring/ summer and purple fruit in the fall. I would normally recommend planting cactus in amended soil in a raised bed. Not this one, this is something special. It’s been growing in pure red clay, has seen negative temperatures and is 4 feet tall x 6 feet x 15 feet. I’ve experimented and potted pads in pure clay in pots and left them out all winter, the roots completely soaked and frozen at times and they don’t rot. I would say this is hardy to zone 5b, in a cold climate like that I would recommend planting in amended soil and planting close to your house for some protection. This may be one of the most cold hardy big growing opuntias.
