[LOC S118 DL AAE] Description ART OF THIS CENTURY: OBJECTS, DRAWINGS, PHOTOGRAPHS, PAINTINGS, SCULPTURE, COLLAGE 1910-1942Guggenheim, Peggy (editor) - Prefaces By Andre Breton, Arp, and Piet Mondrian Publisher: Arno Press; Authorized Reprint Edition, 1968Art of This Century / Peggy Guggenheim, New York 1968. Original yellow cloth hardcover with cover design by Max Ernst; 156 pages with b/w examples of artists work of approximately 69 artists; many photos of artist face/eyes; "The purpose of this book is to serve as a catalogue to the permanent collection exhibited at ART OF THIS CENTURY. As most things change unexpectedly during the course of their development this catalogue has, to my great surprise, become an anthology of non-realistic art covering the period of 1910 to 1942. Its limitations are due to the fact that it contains only reproductions of paintings and sculpture owned by me. I do hope that the next edition will be more complete and that I shall be able to acquire several other important works that represent phases of the evolution of this art." (Peggy Guggenheim, forward pg. 9). ARP, KANDINSKY, KLEE, MONDRIAN, LEONORA CARRINGTON, MARCEL DUCHAMP, FRANCIS PICABIA, ROBERT DELAUNAY, LEGER, ARCHIPENKO, MALEVICH, LISSITZKY, THEO VAN DOESBURG, NAUM GABO, BEN NICHOLSON, ALEXANDER CALDER, CHARLES HOWARD, MAX ERNST, MAN RAY, KURT SCHWITTERS, MIRO, TANGUY, MAGRITTE, ANDRE BRETON, DALI, LAWRENCE VAIL, WOLFGANG PAALEN, LEONOR FINI, MATTA ... to name a few. SURREALISM, FUTURISM, DADA, ABSTRACT ART ... "The Art of This Century gallery was opened by Peggy Guggenheim at 30 West 57th Street in Manhattan, New York City on October 20, 1942. The gallery occupied two commercial spaces on the seventh floor of a building that was part of the midtown arts district including the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, Helena Rubinstein's New Art Center, and numerous commercial galleries. The gallery exhibited important modern art until it closed in 1947, when Guggenheim returned to Europe. The gallery was designed by architect, artist, and visionary Frederick Kiesler. "
