Description: Concertgebouw program from March 23 and 24, 1918. Very good condition, moderate foxing throughout, rust on stapled binding. I've probably listened to the Mengelberg St Matthew Passion recording from 1939 about fifty times...sometimes (while I'm listening) I feel it's the best recorded performance of any music ever. That piece and Mahler's Fourth are maybe the two works that are most associated with Mengelberg. And yet it's somehow startling that this program still exists--two performances of the Passion from March 1918, while WWI was still on. His first recordings wouldn't be made for another eight years. Lucky audience member to have seen a performance like this. Free shipping and insurance.
