Description: Art Nouveau Craftsman glazed earthenware vase with engraved silver overlay. Made by Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati in 1895. Ovoid amphora with silver bracket side handles mounted to shoulder. Overlay in form of asymmetrical cartouche engraved with script monogram and exuberant leafing scrollwork and flowers framing painted fragile, withering leaves on shaded brown ground. The painter of this melancholy autumnal still life was in the spring of life. Sarah Elizabeth Coyne (1876-1939) began working at Rookwood in 1891 at the tender age of 15 while studying at the Cincinnati Art Academy. Her work was exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Fully marked including dated Rookwood stamp, painter's initials, shape no. 604, size letter E. Silver marks include Gorham maker's stamp and no. R2200. Dimensions: H 6 1/4 x D 4 1/8 in. #BZ197
