Description: Originally developed in Lombardy, the stunning Faenza “Garofano” pattern eventually became the signature pattern of the renowned ceramics capital of Faenza. Faenza, defined as the City of Ceramics, lies 30 miles south of Bologna in northeastern Italy. While an important agricultural and industrial centre, it owes its greatest renown to ceramics. History has it that Marco Polo (Venezia 1254-1324) brought the Garofano pattern from the Orient in 1279 (along with the pasta!), and the pale blue-gray backed pattern, typically applied to a scalloped-edge form, has been a highly desired collectible ever since. On offer is a rare set of three salad/luncheon sized plates( 7.5"+) and four smaller ( 6.5") bread plates. All feature the characteristic scalloped border and the hand painted marking as shown in the photos. All plates are in EUC with no significant chips, cracks, crazing, fading, staining, utensil marks or other evidence of wear.
