Happydaystoytown ꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷ IN TRUTH, THEIR nuts had gone many months earlier. But this, the Small Faces' third and final studio album, represented the peak of the band’s pop art ambition. Written in the aftermath of the psychedelic Summer of Love, and envisaged as a concept album of sorts, Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake found London’s favorite Mod combo blowing open their sound. It was a risk, but in commercial terms it paid off, with the album enjoying a six-week stint at the top of the UK charts after its release in May 1968. With its original fold-out circular sleeve, its in-crowd title that spoke to the ever growing secret society of dope-smokers, and the strong whiff of a ’concept’ underlying the entire affair, Ogdens has always been regarded as the Small Faces’ masterpiece. With material that ranged from powerhouse, Jimi Hendrix style numbers (Song Of A Baker, Rollin’ Over) to characteristic Cockney-style knees-ups (Rene, Lazy Sunday), it’s certainly their most wide-ranging and dynamic affair, given an additional twist courtesy of Stanley Unwin’s spoken wordplay links that ran through the record’s second side. It's that which affords Ogdens its concept album status, though as keyboard player Ian ‘Mac’ McLagan concedes, "The concept only really applied to the album’s second side." Even then, the fashionable tale of ‘Happiness Stan’ in search of the other half of the moon, was probably half-baked at best - which, given the lowly status of ‘the concept album' since the mid-1970s, is probably no bad thing. Happily, Ogdens far exceeds its conceptual straitjacketing. Less happily, though, it was to be the third and final Small Faces album. Fatigued by the awkward pop/rock balance that continually faced the group, front man Steve Marriott announced his departure at the end of 1968. "Playing the hits frustrated him," says drummer Kenney Jones. By mid-1969, the Small Faces were no more, but from the ashes rose two hugely successful bands - Humble Pie and the Faces.
