Description: Additional Information from Movie Mars Product Description Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Wilbur Ware (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York on November 3, 1957. Originally released on Blue Note (81581). Sonny Rollins' working band for this gig consisted of Donald Bailey and Pete LaRoca, but by the time Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones arrive for the evening set (with "Old Devil Moon," included on VOLUME 1), the saxophonist is truly fired up. "What Is This Thing Called Love" begins with loose percussive figures and builds into an extended harmonic workout on Cole Porter's famous chord changes. Rollins' ghostly tone and piping lines transform "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" into a sumptuous ballad, with cool, moaning propulsion from Jones' brushes and a driving, rock-solid bass line from Ware (who employs simple declarative sentences and a percussive attack throughout, eschewing extraneous guitar-like flourishes). "Sonnymoon For Two" is an infectuous twelve-bar vamp, taken at a medium bounce, and Ware's understated power allows Rollins and Jones to swing the blues with dizzying intensity. Rollins' gorgeous ballad interpretations of "I Can't Get Started" and "All The Things You Are" illustrates how much he extended on both Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young--check out his closing cadenza with its reference to "I've Grown Accustomed To Your Face." (Among Rollins' many quotes and asides, Jack Benny's theme song makes a cameo on "I'll Remember April.") Of two takes on "Get Happy," the first is taken at a steeplechase tempo, while the closer proceeds from a trademark Jones groove. Best of all, Rollins' jagged line and shifting changes on "Striver's Row" inspire fiery interplay with Jones and some of Sonny's most boppish expositions. About Movie Mars All items are Brand New.
