Officially known as the US M1917 Helmet, it was also known colloquially as the dishpan hat, tin pan hat, washbasin, battle bowler, and Kelly helmet. During World War I, standard helmets were made from thin steel. They provided protection mainly against shrapnel rather than shock waves. This is an example of a doughboy helmet, also called a Brodie helmet or M1917 Helmet. Helmet is more than 100 years old and in great shape. The three holes drilled on the rims at intervals during manufacturing were for holding the inner helmet's rim during production to allow for easy attachment of the rivets and straps. Great fact: The M1917 helmet was designed to withstand a .45 caliber pistol bullet traveling at 600 feet per second from a distance of 10 feet.
